ASIO

What is ASIO?

Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) was established in 1949 as Australia’s national security intelligence service. ASIO operates under the direction of the Director-General of Security who reports to the Attorney-General.

It has specific legislative responsibility for countering espionage and foreign interference. They work closely with partners in Australia and overseas to detect and degrade the harmful activities of our adversaries. Recently they have detected and degraded significant hostile foreign intelligence activity against Australia’s interests. They work across government and private industry to increase awareness of the threat and develop effective countermeasures.
